Películas: El signo del león (1959), Mi noche con Maud (1969), El amor después del mediodía (1972) y Una historia de otoño (1999), entre otras. También ha realizado adaptaciones de obras literarias: La marquesa de O. (1976) y La inglesa y el duque (2001).

Director de cine francés. Después de trabajar como profesor de secundaria, colaboró en la fundación y fue el primer editor de La Gazette du Cinéma en 1950. Posteriormente ejerció como redactor jefe de la influyente revista de la nouvelle vague Cahiers du Cinéma (1957–63). Tras dirigir varios cortos, realizó la serie Seis cuentos morales, en que se destacan las exitosas películas Mi noche con Maud (1968), La rodilla de Clara (1970) y El amor después del mediodía (1972), sensibles estudios del amor romántico. Algunos de sus filmes posteriores son La Marquesa de O (1976), Las noches de la luna llena (1984) y Cuento de otoño (1999).
